About
Aura Elena Murillo Pérez and Louise Lenborg Skajem founded Resting Reef in 2022. It turns human or pet ashes into reef structures placed in damaged marine habitats, as an alternative to a traditional funeral or memorial. Murillo Pérez had found the funeral industry little changed in a century after her father died suddenly in 2018.
At its pilot reef in Bali, marine life showed 14 times more biodiversity than nearby damaged areas, with 84 species recorded. The company has won grants including from Innovate UK, and Murillo Pérez was named on Forbes' 30 Under 30 Social Impact list in 2024.
