Zijing Li and Lívia Ribeiro de Souza, then researchers at the University of Cambridge, founded Mimicrete in 2021. Its concrete has a vascular system inspired by biology that heals large cracks on its own, often within 24 hours, restoring strength without manual repair.

Mimicrete won a £450k Innovate UK grant in 2022 and a £250k investment from Morgan Stanley, and it is being trialled on live construction projects, including large bridges.

Number 69 on the Startups 100 Index 2026.
