Martin Sokk and Mihkel Aamer, both early employees at Wise, founded Lightyear in 2020 after paying more than £9,000 in hidden investing fees between them. Lightyear is a low-fee investing platform with no platform fees, hidden charges or penalties for withdrawing money, and it also offers a product for businesses.

Lightyear closed a $23m Series B and holds over $1bn in customer assets. It operates in 25 countries, more than 4,000 European firms reportedly use its business product, and it has reportedly been valued at over $200m.
