About
Ben Medland founded DRIFT Energy in 2021 after walking past a wind turbine that was not turning and wondering why renewable power could not follow the weather. DRIFT's high-tech sailing vessels make green hydrogen from seawater at sea, steered by a routing algorithm to where the wind is just right, and return to port when their tanks are full.
Medland built a demonstrator from two foiling yachts in 12 weeks. DRIFT raised £4.65m in seed funding, was a COP28 award winner and won the Startups 100 2025 Sustainability Award.
